JUDGE JOHN RICHARDS
HISTORIC ADIRONDAC SURVEYOR


Welsh immigrant, 1790, arrived at Remsen-Utica, NY area. Moved to Bolton Landing and during 1795 to log-house homestead with new wife Sarah Rees in Wevertown, NY.

State Surveyor, 1796, surveyed thousands of Adirondack acres in the Military Tract, Moose River Tract outbounds, and Totten and Crossfield Patent.
First on Whiteface and Big Slide Mountains.
First supervisor of the Town of Johnsburg in 1805, served for the next 15 years.
New York Assemblyman during the War of 1812 and appointed to the NY State 1821 Constitutional Convention.
Judge of the Court of Common Plea from 1805 to 1850, serving in Lake George and Johnsburg.
Federal Congressman, 1822-1825, under the Presidency of James Monroe.

As a research vehicle, this book contains John Richards’ life as a surveyor and statesman, including research on many families who lived in the Adirondack area.
